#13: LIMIT IMMIGRATION TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
New Year's Eve fires throughout France + Meloni cracks down on NGOs + Bolsonaro heads to Florida + MORE!
LIMIT IMMIGRATION TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
One of Switzerland’s leading parties, the Swiss People’s Party, wants to hold a referendum to limit immigration should the nation’s population hit 10 million.
“Our country is cracking in every corner. We are going through the debacles of recent years. If we don’t intervene, we will be overtaken by events,” said party campaign manager Marcel Dettling.
“Whoever has set foot in Switzerland will never leave the country. Migrants from Africa have welfare rates of 34 percent.”
On Jan. 6 the party will meet to discuss the referendum which is titled “Initiative for Sustainability.”
A draft of the referendum places a population cap of 10 million until 2050.
“The migration figures are hair-raising,” said national councilor Thomas Matter.
“It is urgent to leave the model of quantitative growth for qualitative growth.”
NEW YEAR’S EVE FIRES THROUGHOUT FRANCE
Arsonists set hundreds of cars ablaze throughout France on New Year’s Eve. Several days prior, municipalities had issued warnings about the impending violence, including cordoning off areas where people could safely park their cars to avoid them being torched.
Violence between hooligans and police also broke out in several cities including Nantes, Ain and Toulouse, where a police station was attacked.
In Toulouse, police also intervened in an attempted rape near Arenes metro station after a bystander responded to a woman in crisis. A 22-year-old suspect was arrested by authorities as a result of the incident.
MACRON WANTS TO GIVE FREE CONDOMS TO MINORS
As of today, young people in France between ages 18 and 25 will be able to request free condoms at the expense of taxpayers.
The measure was introduced by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Earlier this month, Macron had tweeted that he hopes the initiative will be extended to people under the age of 18.
“I announced yesterday that condoms would be free for all 18-25 year olds. I’ve been asked to extend this measure to minors,” tweeted Macron.
MELONI TO CRACK DOWN ON MIGRANT NGOS
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will introduce stricter measures for NGO boats in the Mediterranean Sea this year to clamp down on the inflow of migration.
On Dec. 28 2022, the country’s council of ministers approved a security decree to increase penalties for those improperly transporting people into Italy.
The measures include requiring NGO boats to declare whether they intend to file asylum requests once they enter Europe.
Those who violate the rules could face financial penalties and even have their boats seized by Italian port authorities over repeat infractions.
STUDY FINDS HIGHER RISK OF COVID INFECTION AMONG VAXXED
A study published in the scientific journal medRXiv found that the risk of Covid-19 infection increased in participants with the number of booster doses previously received.
“Among 51011 (healthcare) employees, 20689 (41%) had had a previous documented episode of COVID-19, and 42064 (83%) had received at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 occurred in 2452 (5%) during the study,” wrote researchers.
“Risk of COVID-19 increased with time since the most recent prior COVID-19 episode and with the number of vaccine doses previously received.”
BOLSONARO HEADS TO FLORIDA
Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has headed to Florida, skipping the inauguration of his political opponent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
According to Brazilian media, Bolsonaro will be in the US until Jan. 30 in an attempt to dissuade supporters from taking further actions against the incoming leadership.
“We lost a battle, but we will not lose the war,” Bolsonaro said. “The world does not end on Jan. 1.”
The move comes as supporters throughout Brazil have protested the hotly contested 2022 election. With Bolsonaro’s departure, vice president Gen. Hamilton Mourao will be acting president.
