PRIEST CHARGED FOR HOLDING “FREE SPEECH” SIGN OUTSIDE ABORTION CENTRE
In Birmingham, UK, Fr. Sean Gough was detained and charged with “intimidating service users” after he held a “praying for free speech” sign outside of an abortion clinic that was closed.
He also faced a criminal charge for having an “unborn lives matter” bumper sticker on his car.
The “Public Spaces Protection Order” introduced in November 2022 makes it illegal to demonstrate or even pray in the areas surrounding abortion centres. According to Gough, the right to freedom of expression is under threat in his home country.
“I often pray in my head near the abortion facility, but at the time in question, I was praying for free speech, which is under severe pressure in our country today,” said Gough.
“At all times, I believed my actions to be lawful – freedom of expression, especially when peaceful, is protected in domestic and international law.”
Gough has retained lawyers to fight both charges.
FAR-LEFT DESECRATES MILITARY CEMETERY
Anarchists desecrated a military cemetery in Briançon, France this week.
Authorities found French flags removed from gravestones and graffiti bearing anarchist symbology and slurs including the words “nazis” and “fascists.”
Briançon Mayor Arnaud Murgia called the incident an indignity to the memories of dead soldiers.
“Indignation, anger at the desecration of the Carré Militaire by extreme left groups that are rampant on the border,” tweeted Murgia.
“I have just spoken with the police so that we can get some answers. Unacceptable to attack the graves of soldiers who died for France.”
CITY BANS MEAT FOR 28,000 PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS
The city of Malmö, Sweden will no longer serve meat lunches for public sector workers or municipal politicians.
The policy is part of the region's push to reduce its carbon output. According to statistics, between 2010 and 2019, Malmö had cut meat purchases by 41%.
For the time being, the ban only applies to lunchtime conferences. Diners will still be able to order either chicken or fish should the conferences take place in the evening.
“All food served must be vegetarian/vegan in accordance with (the city’s) environmental program and Malmo’s food policy,” the bylaw states.
“For dinner in the evening, the standard is vegetarian, but it is possible to order another protein source in the form of chicken or fish.”
FRENCH CASTLE TRANSFORMED INTO MIGRANT HOUSING
Approximately 200 migrants will be housed in the historic French Château de Thiverval-Grignon.
The decision by state authorities to turn the castle into a migrant housing project has prompted protests.
Originally, the 17th-century estate belonged to King Henry II’s royal mistress Diane de Poitiers. Today the property is owned by the NGO Emmaus France.
Led by right-wing politician Eric Zemmour's party, "Reconquest!", unhappy locals showed up on the castle's grounds this week to express their disapproval of the project.
As of December 2022, 62 migrants had already been housed in the castle with the approval of local mayors and the federal government.
SEVEN CHARGED IN PLOT TO KILL VIKTOR ORBÁN
Hungary’s top prosecutors have charged seven suspects believed to have plotted to assassinate Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and 32 other high-level public figures.
The anti-authority fringe group is accused of setting up a para-governmental organization bearing its own justice system, executive branch and constitution.
According to the state indictment, a couple involved with the sect gave birth to a child without registering the child in public records.
“In doing so, the parents deliberately failed to provide their child with citizenship or any documents needed for social identification and entitlement to benefits, and systematically and completely refused to cooperate with professionals acting legally to protect the child,” court documents stated.
“These repeated failures to comply with their obligations have endangered the physical development of their minor child.”
Prosecutors also alleged that in June 2020 one of the ring leaders put out a “death warrant” on investigators. Suspects are also being accused of attempting to “violently change the constitutional order” by encouraging members to assassinate public figures.
