EU TO START “HATEFUL CONTENT” REMOVAL NOTICES TO SOCIAL MEDIA THIS AUGUST
Social media platforms could face sanctions from the European Commission if they refuse to obey orders to remove so-called “hateful content” when member countries are facing moments of social upheaval.
The European Commissioner for Internal Markets, Thierry Breton, issued a stern warning to tech giants on the heels of widespread rioting in France .
Breton made the remarks in an interview with France Info, a French news channel.
Beginning on Aug. 25, the new rules will be in place under the Digital Services ACT giving the Commission powers to intervene in platforms like Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and others.
"If they fail to do so, they will be immediately sanctioned. We have teams who can intervene immediately," threatened Breton.
“Platforms will have to demonstrate to us that they have taken steps to enforce the law.”
MUHAMMAD, YANIS MOST COMMON NAMES OF FRENCH RIOTERS
An analysis of first names of those arrested during France’s violent riots in June discovered that Mohamed and Yanis were the two top most common names of offenders.

Those names were followed by Enzo, Maxim and Adam.

USDA APPROVES SALE OF “LAB-GROWN MEAT” TO CONSUMERS
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has green-lit the sale of “lab-grown meat” to Americans.
Authorization was granted to Upside Foods and GOOD Meat allowing them to release "cultivated chicken" products onto the market. “Lab-grown meat” is made in a laboratory using cells gathered from their respective animals.
Supporters of the technology say that lab-grown meat offers a more sustainable and ethical alternative to conventional meat production.
The process of making the product includes large cultivation tanks in a process similar to brewing.
GOOD Meat, a subsidiary of Eat Just, said that it’s "slaughter-free" chicken products have been available in Singapore since 2020, and that it is now ready to serve the lab meat on the plates of Americans.
The first US customers of lab-grown chicken will be the restaurants of Chef José Andrés at one of his 30 eateries across the country.
EL SALVADOR SEES 44% DECLINE IN US BORDER CROSSINGS
More people are choosing to remain in El Salvador instead of making the long trek across the US border, recent immigration data figures show.
According to the Wall Street Journal, border crossings by people from El Salvador has declined by a shocking 44%.
Much of the credit is being given to President Nayib Bukele’s impressive crackdown on crime, particularly the notorious MS-13 gang.
“The strategy has helped lower homicides by 92% compared with 2015, giving Bukele the support of nine of every 10 Salvadorans, polls show. The number of Salvadorans illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border has dropped by 44%, wrote the Wall St. Journal.
This comes at a time when illegal immigration has hit a record peak under US President Joe Biden.
The decline in border crossings by El Salvadorans is a far-cry from 2010 levels, when one fifth of the entire country’s population was reported to be in the US.
BRAZIL SUPREME COURT MINISTER CHEERS DEFEATING “BOLSONARISM”
Brazil’s opposition is seeking the impeachment of Supreme Court Minister Luis Roberto Barroso after he proclaimed that he “defeated Bolsonarism” in a recent speech.
Barroso was referencing a decision by the country’s electoral court that ruled former President Jair Bolsonaro could not seek re-election until the year 2030.
“We are creating a new future and tackling racial inequality, so I leave here with renewed energy from agreement and disagreement, because this is the democracy we have won. We defeated censorship, we defeated torture, we defeated Bolsonarism to allow democracy and the free manifestation of all people”, said Barroso.
Protestors in the crowd booed Barroso’s proclamation.
Chamber of Deputies opposition leader Carlos Jordy has questioned the impartiality of the supposed “independent” justice.
“Is this normal? Imagine a STF minister saying in a lecture that they 'defeated lulo-petismo,” referencing the movement of current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
